Safe and efficient interior fire attack requires that the combat firefighter have
intimate knowledge of the Self Contained Breathing apparatus as it may be all that stands between thema nd death.
This Introductory class will be instrumental in familiarizing the ne firefighter in all
aspects of use, care, and maintenance of the SCBA. This class will utilize the IFSTA 200 Essentials Manual as a guide in covering
the requirements for firefighter I and II certification. Included is a search and rescue evaluation within the maze of a smoke tower.
This class (or one similar to it ) is a prerequisite for the live fire training class.
Each trainee should have his or her own pack and full turnout gear. Be prepared for cold weather during the outside activities.
Refilling of air bottles will be available at either the Wyoming Fire Academy or at Riverton Fire Station #1.
All air bottles must have a current Hydro test marking.
Randy Odray ahs been the County Training Officer for the Campbell County Fire Department for 4 years; and
has been involved in training for 6 years. He has been a member of the Fire Department in Campbell County
for 12 years. Randy graduated from Casper College with an Associates of Science Degree in Fire Technology,
he is certified as a Fire Apparatus Operator, Fire Officer III, Firefighter II, Fire Service Instructor,
Strike Team/Task Force Leader, and EMT Basic. His programs are always heavily laden with teamwork strategies
and personal safety issues.
WILDFIRE DEATH AND DESTRUCTION
Instructors: Mike Hostetler and Ralph Cardinal

Why do we keep killing our wildland firefighters? This eight hour class examines several recent
fatalities Fires and attempts to bring facts into an understnadable perspective. Participants will
be encouraged to explore alternative methods of prblem solving in an effort to improve their own performance
future incidents.
Mike Hostetler, District Forester for the Wyoming State Forestry Division, is responsible for the timber
and fire management on all State Trust Lands in his district. This district covers Sheridan, Johnson, and Campbell counties
Hoss, , in operations is a Branch Director on the Rocky Mountain Class One Fire Overhead Team and has
fought fire int he Western United States including Alaska. Hs wealth of knowledge and his experience iwll bring color and
grim fact to safe wildfire fighting.
Ralph Cardinal is the past Coordinator of the Wyoming Fire Academy and past Division chief for the Fremont County Fire District.
Ralph has 26 years of fire service experience in both paid and volunteer departments. He is also red carded as a Branch
Supervisor with the Rocky Mountain INcident Management Team and has conducted classes at fire schools nationally.
Defensive Driving With Fire Apparatus

Safe defensive driving is necessary to accomplish your objective of saving life and property.
This class is oriented towared the operation of fire apparatus, not the ordinary pick-up truck,
and will cover such topics as vehicle characteristics, weather and traffic factors, and emergency
driving techniques. Completion of this course may be a factor in reducing your insurance premium.
Pleas note that this class is limited to 50 students. An addition charge of $15.00 is required
to pay for the workbooks used in this class.
Ashley Powell, who served on the Green River Fire Department is a 25 year veteran with the Wyoming
Highway Patrol. He has taught Defensive Driving classes for the past 22 years,
including emergency response driving techniques. He is certified through the Natioonal Safety Council
as Police, Fire and Ambulance C.E.V.O. Instructor and is a P.O.S.T Certified Instructor
with the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy
Live Fire Training
(4 hours) limited to 15 students
Instructor Ken and Marlene Aitchison
Level: Basic
The trainee in the Fire Academy Burn Building can experience live fire situations under controlled
conditions. Subjects that will be covered include search patterns, direct and indirect fire attack and
ventilation methods. A prerequisite of this class is completion of Basic Air Packs or equivalent and working
Knwoledge of your SCBA.
Pleas not that this class is limited to 15 trainees per class but is offered three times. Bring your
Complete bunker gear and a working SCBA. Be prepared for cold weather. Refilling
of bottles will be available at either the Wyoming Fire Academy or at Riverton Fire Station #1.
All bottles must have a current hydrotest marking.
You must have a completed LIVE FIRE TRAINING VERIFICATION form returned with you registration AND brought
to the classs by Each studend. The form must be signed by the chief or training officer.
NO FOR, NO ADMISSION to the live fire training.
Ken is an Assistant Chief of Operationf for the Wyoming Air National Guard Fire Department in Cheyenne. He began
his career in the fire service as a volunteer with the Buffalo City Fire Department in
January of 1984. Ken joined Johnson County Fire Department the next year and served on both departments until moving to
Laramie in the Summer of 1988 to attend the University of Wyoming. While in Laramie,
he worked with the Albany County Emergency Management Agency. Ken began his employment with the WANG
Fire Department in December of 1990. He also was a firefighter and an officer for Laramie County Fire District Number 2
from September 1991 through September of 1998.
Ken's certifications include Haz-Mat technician, Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II and EMT-B.
Ken provides haz-mat training through the State Fire Marshall's Office and wildland fire training through the State Forestry
in the Laramie County area. Together, Ken and Marlene provide Basic Emergency Care and CPR training.
Foam Tactics
(4hours)
Instructor: Doug O'Donnell
Level: Intermediate
This class will explain the concept and chemistry of foam as an enhancement to fire
suppression. It will identify types of foam and characteristics for each, look at injection
systems, batch mixing, and eductors, and look at advantages and strategies for each kind.
Students will be shown the operatio and performance of fog/combination nozzles, low and medium
expansion foam tubes, and CAFS. The class will present application techniques and strategies for
structural and wildland suppression, and show research and reports on the use of Class A foaming Agent.
Doug O'Donnell has been with O'Donnell Fire Service for 19 years (a private fire service).
He is a former member of Montana Fire Chiefs board of Directors, 8 years as Western Regional Manager
for Task Force Tips, and has instructed classes in 12 Western States and Canada.
The Golden Hour/Emergency Services Response to the Death Scene

The Golden Hour, does it exist in Wyoming? This course will comver the Golden Hour of trauma care. it is a quick course on decreasing scene time to get the patient to definitve care.
this is the basics of "bar-ditch" medicine, rapid assessment, rapid decision making, and rapid treatment. We will also cover the basics of helicopter use and when to call them in. This is part A to the Death Scene class, because if we can not get there in time.......
Emergency Services Response to the Death Scene is a class designed to introduce the Emergency Service Personnel to the proper approach to the death scene. It will include discussions of the scene and body preservation and recovery as well as evidence preservation. The class will include accidental, homicidal, and suicidal cases. The preservation of life and property are foremost in the duties of Emergency Services. Information will be provided to assist an investigator who has the task of reconstructing the incident. This clsass is POST Certified.
Ed. McAuslan is a retired 26 year veteran of the Riverton Police Department. He served one year with the Glenrock Police Department prior to employment with RPD. He has served a patrol officer, ten years a criminal investigator and a patrol supervisor. He now serves as the Coroner of Fremont Count, after serving with that office 24 years. He was an Emergency Medical Technician for the Fremont County Ambulance for 15 years. He is certified by the Wyoming Peace Officer's Standards and Training Commission to teach death investigation. He has taught at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy, State Trauma conference, and at the Fremont County Sudden Death Seminar.
Kenny Metzler joined the Fremont County Firefighters in 1976. He advanced to the rank of Fire Chief of Missouri Valley and currently holds the rank of battalion Chief. He has served as the training officer for Fremont County, the Wyoming Fire Academy, and now serves as the training Officer for the Department of Electrical Safety since 1991. Ken is a certified Fire Officer III and POST Certified Instructor for Wyoming.
Tim Weave works as a paramedic with the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper. Tim is also a volunteer firefighter. He has been an EMT for 16 years a paramedic for 15 years. Tim has many different training courses related to firefighting and EMS.
TERRORISM - OPERATION PLANNING
(8 hours)
Instructor: Robert McDaniel and Kevin Shanley
Level: Advanced
This course will provide a "toolbox" of concepts for plan development. The course curiculum is balanced between teoretical concepts and pratical applications of the tools presented, focusing on product oriented team approach to the planning process. As students participate in group planning activities, they will be able to apply the information and techniques presented in the class to facilitate and enhanced awareness to team dynamis in the planning process.

This class is intended for emergency managers and planners. This class will be POST certified.
Robert McDaniel is faculty of Florida State University, Florida PUblic Affairs Center, Researching emergency management projects. He is an associate of TEAM Simulators Inc., a team building, change, crisis and leadership training corporation, and an instructor for the American Red Cross Disaster Planning Workshop for Business and Industry. He is an Operations officer for the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management Operation Center, and a training officer for the Florida Emergency Management.
Kevin Shanley is a Juis Doctor from the New England School of Law, who also has a master of Arts in Criminal Justice from John Jay College and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. He is a certified Law Enforcement Planner and a member of the Internation Association of Law Enforcement Planners. Among his duties, Kevin is the planning manager for the Bureau of Compliance and Support, Florida Division of Emergency Management, and the Director of the Planning Bureau of the Tampa Police Department.
S231 ENGINE BOSS
(8 HOURS)
Instructor: Paul Morency and Dana Stone
Level: Intermediate.
Engine Boss is an eight hour class designed to meet the training needs of an incident Engine Boss outlined in the Wildland Fire Qualification Subsystem Guide 3100-1 NWGC standard. this is one of the three classes needed to be (red Card) Certified as Engine Boss. Take Not: There is a pre requisite which is S-290 Intermediate Fire Behavior, Engine Operator carded for 5 to years, or the County Fire Wardens approval.
Paul Morency, District Forester for the State of Wyoming Forestry Division, is responsible for the timber and fire management on all State Trust lands in his district. the district covers Park, Big Horn, Hot Springs and Fremont Counties. Paul has 17 years of experience in wildland firefighting from initial attack to working an overhead team.
Auto Extrication
(12hours) (30 student limit)
Instructor: Paul Downey & Dwight Clark
Level: Intermediate
This will be a twevle hour class dealing with theory and vehcile rescue. The students will be required to do hands on training using both hydraulic and hand tools. The classroom will cover theory of extrication, new car design and safety factors, ie. airbags and pasive restraints. Students will be required to have the minimum safety equipment of leather boots, coveralls, leather gloves and a hard hat.
Paul downey is the past chief of the Missouri Valley Fire Department. He has extensive experience in the training of firefighters in structural fires and auto extrication all over the western United States. He is a certified Firefighter I and a Fire Service Instructor I.
Dwight Clark joined the San Angelo, Texas Fire Department in 1959. He advanced to Assistan Fire Chief in 1990. He took a paid Fire Dhief position for Travis County Rural Fire Protection District 5 in Austin, Texas in 1992. He completed the NFA Executive Fire Officer Program in 1993.
Overview of NFIRS 5.0 Fire Incident Reporting System

Instructor: Donna Depew
Level: Intermediate
The current fire incident reporting system (NFIRS Version 4.1) is currently being revised to include all incident response information. The class offered is an overview of the system the State Fire Marshal's Office plans to implement sometime after January 1, 1999 NIFRS 5.0 is a modular system requiring users to complete ony those modules necessary based on incident type. Using fire and non fire incident scenarios, students will have the opportunity to complete incident reports.
Pleas not that this class is offered on Saturday only and is limited to 20 students. This class fulfills one of the practical requirements for certification at FFII level.
Donna Depew has been the Wyoming Fire Incident Reporting System Program Manager since 1991 and is certified through the Wyoming Certification Program as a Public Educator II. She is an executive officer with the Board of Directors of the National Fire Information Council (which has oversight for the national system) and is an adjunct instructor at the National Fire Academy for the NFIRS Program Management course.
